Jesus drove those who were selling and those who were buying in the temple out!

He overturned the tables belonging to money changers and the seats of those who sold doves, and he prevented anyone from carrying anything through the temple. Why? He did this to teach all who could hear his words. He shouted — “Is it not written, my house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations? But you have made it a den of robbers.”

A den is a place that bandits congregate. They hide in these places for safety from the deeds they have done on the streets. Yet, here was Jesus referring to the temple as a den and the people as robbers. Such was Jesus’ disgust, that he came into the place that should actually be a holy place— which they had turned into their safety den, and he brandished a whip.

Jesus saw straight through them, he could see right away that they had brought their devious and cunning ways into the temple and that they had not changed at all. They believed that merely coming to the temple was good enough to please God, but that is not enough.

The Lord requires that we let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. That we do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our God (see Amos 5:24 and Micah 6:8)
