It was a time when they gathered
to celebrate freedom

to share the Passover meal
Yet Jesus knew they needed to gather in isolation
so a secret place was prepared, distant from the public eye.

This was a special time
a time like no other
when heaven touched earth
and all things were stilled

It was a time when light shone into the darkest of places

When Jesus
took the bread of the passover meal
blessed it
broke it and
gave it to those present, saying “Take, this is my body.”

As he passed the bread
each disciple took and ate
and all kept silence.

Then speaking blessings and thanksgiving into that silence
Jesus picked up the cup and gave it to them saying
“This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many…”

They drank in the deepest silence,
where the darkness hushed
and the light shone brightest

Jesus knelt at their feet
with towel and basin and began to clean them
He said to Peter
“Unless I wash you, you have no share with me”
Together they sang a hymn, and Judas slipped out into the darkness of night.
Although the light grew dim, The Word remains.
