Finding another way

  • Believing is not at all easy.

“He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee.”
Matthew 28:6-7

There is a man who sells his wares in Dewsbury Market in Yorkshire, he approached me one morning, “surprised” he said to see me walking in that part of the town. Only because as he explained, he had never seen a minister here before. We had an interesting discussion, but his interest seemed to turn to contempt.

I’ve been back to see him and speak with him on a number of occasions. We’ve spoken about God and the Bible and resurrection of Jesus Christ and his response is always “I just can’t believe ... That cannot be true ... No, I can’t believe.” I realised that what I had there was a difficult task, but I felt the need to continue, because he had first approached me. Maybe his initial approach was with the idea to ridicule me. I still decided to visit him every so often.

I’ve thought about his “I just can’t believe” response, and realised that whatever I offered him, his answer would be the same. “I just can’t believe ... That cannot be true ... No, I can’t believe.” There would be nothing that I could do or say to change his perspective, unless…

Unless I first did the work of understanding the deep down reason, the why, of his disbelief. First, talk about his story, and his hopes, and his beliefs and then ... maybe
